Katharography
What is Katharography?
As a sculptor reshapes a block of marble, I alter the original photographic shot through reducing or amplifying elements to create meticulous abstract fine art works. The result is symmetrical or asymmetrical renderings that reveal a tension between static and dynamic forces.
The conceptual fine art designs are the outcome of experimentation -an intersection of photography, painting, and sculpting. It takes endless hours at the computer to convert the shot into the abstract designs I envision. The result is a photograph of something that is questionable whether it ever existed -what you see is not what is but what your mind sees…
To describe my technique, I coined the process “Katharography” from the Greek Katharós = to scratch, to clean, to purify, and Graphy = to illustrate. Coincidentally, Katharós also means oak tree which is what Cajiga, my last name, means.
